Rewards, rewards, rewards! Everyone enjoys receiving rewards, recognition, accolades, appreciation or kudos of some sort. Something indicating that one is pleased with us for some reason or another feels nice. If it comes from an employer, it can also indicate that we are on the right track and encourage us to keep up the good work. But no acknowledgement on this earth could compare to receiving notice of satisfaction or pleasure from Jesus. Nothing on this earth could ever compare to the peace of knowing that God is pleased with us.
But what about the flip side, when we are not at our best? Misery, shame and embarrassment comes when we are identified for messing up, making a mistake, losing control, going off, missing it, or not doing our best. And again, the disappointment and despair is far deeper when we know that we have not pleased God.
But oh what good news it is to know that, “…God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). You see, Jesus did not wait until we were at our best to demonstrate His great love for us. He didn’t wait for us to get it together first. For without Him, we could not. Instead, He selflessly laid down His own life for us while we were yet sinners.
Over and again, when I feel like I’m not at my best (not praying enough, studying enough, fasting enough, etc.), the Lord continues to demonstrate his Love. It’s as if he clearly taps me on my shoulder saying, “I’m still here,” “I forgive you,” “I still love you,” and “I still have purpose for you.” Then He’ll give me an assignment that I feel so inadequate to complete.
But one thing I know is this, while I cannot trust in this ole flesh, I can always trust in Jesus. Always, because Great is His Faithfulness! So don’t trust in your feelings. They change like the wind. Put your trust in Jesus. His love never fails – even at our worst!
Romans 8:35 – “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?”
